A 27-year-old woman was staying the night at her aunt’s house, when she heard a suspicious noise. The woman retrieved a gun, went to investigate, and spotted an intruder in her aunt’s kitchen. After he was discovered, the home invader approached the woman, at which point she fired, causing him to flee.
Iraq War veteran Zach Rogers was on his third shift clerking at the 21st Amendment Liquor Store in Indianapolis, Ind. when he was forced to use his Second Amendment right to self-defense. An unruly customer instigated an argument and physical altercation with Rogers, during which the clerk retrieved a gun and shot the criminal. Following an investigation, a spokeswoman for the local prosecutor’s office made clear, “the shooting was self-defense,” and that Rogers would not face charges.
Drawing the ire of the gun lobby, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is eyeing a violence tax on guns and ammunition sold in the city and suburbs, the Chicago Sun Times has learned.

When British couple Andy and Tracey Ferrie were arrested in early September on “suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm,” after using a registered shotgun to fight off a pair of home invaders, self-defense proponents in the U.S. and across the pond feared the worst. After all, in the U.K. the right to self-defense has been degraded into near non-existence; made apparent by the infamous case of farmer Tony Martin and incidents like that of British TV personality Myleene Klass. However, in a rare bout of sanity, U.K. officials have dropped all charges against the Ferries and sent a warning to would-be criminals, in what will hopefully serve as a blueprint for how such cases are handled in the future.

Alabama: Hunting Opportunities Would be Extended with the Reauthorization of Forever Wild
If ratified by Alabama voters on November 6, the Forever Wild Land Trust would be reauthorized for a 20-year period. Since its establishment by constitutional referendum in 1992, the Forever Wild Program has secured more than 227,000 acres with numerous opportunities being available for hunting. Despite Alabama’s undeniable natural beauty, it still lags behind other southeastern states in the amount of accessible public conservation and hunting land. The vast majority of funding for the Forever Wild Land Trust is generated by the interest earned from natural gas royalties, with no monies coming from the taxpayer.
NRA Researchers Respond to PolitiFact Bias
In 2007, with polls showing that only 22 percent of the American people trusted newspapers to tell the truth, and newspaper readership plummeting nationwide, the Tampa Bay Times doubled down on journalists’ already high self-confidence by forming the PolitiFact project, which markets itself as providing the final word on truth in politics.

ATTENTION New Mexico Concealed Handgun Licensees: Update on Important Rule Change Allowing Concealed Carry in State Parks
Yesterday, the State Parks Division of the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department held a public hearing to accept input on proposed amendments to Section 19.5.2.21 of the New Mexico Administrative Code, which includes a removal of the current ban on concealed handgun licensees carrying handguns in state parks. A representative from the NRA-ILA testified in support of this rule change, along with several concealed handgun instructors from across the state. No one spoke in opposition to this proposal. The Department will continue to accept written comments on the measure until 5:00pm on October 31. Please send comments by email to april.alvarado@state.nm.us or by USPS to April Alvarado, EMNRD State Parks Division, 1220 South St. Francis Drive; Santa Fe, NM 87505.

Pennsylvania: Legislature Fails to Act on Important Firearms Preemption Legislation
Despite the fact that nearly fifty local governments have enacted illegal gun control ordinances in violation of the current state firearms preemption law, the Pennsylvania Legislature failed to act on important reform legislation that would have addressed this problem.
NRA seizes on Obama’s support for gun ban
The National Rifle Association, jumping on President Obama’s new and firm support for a Clinton style assault weapons ban, is stepping up its attack on the president in Ohio, Virginia, Florida and Wisconsin with a new “we told you so” theme.
73-year-old clerk defends store, The Livingston Daily Press & Argus, Livingston County, Mich. 10/02/12
A visibly intoxicated man entered Venture Corners convenience store in Deerfield Township, Mich. and tried to purchase beer. Taking into account the man’s state, 73-year-old clerk Fred Price refused to sell him the beer. The lout then threatened Price, showing the clerk what appeared to be a gun in his waistband. Price responded by retrieving a gun and holding the criminal at gunpoint until police could arrive. Upon inspection, the drunken man’s weapon turned out to be a BB gun. This is the second time in three years Price has been forced to defend his store. In 2010, Price used a firearm to scare off an armed robber toting a starter pistol.
Kopel: Louisiana amendment to strengthen right to arms, on November ballot
In state elections, the most important vote this November will be in Louisiana. A referendum there would significantly strengthen protection of the right to keep and bear arms in the state, and would set a very significant national precedent.

Anti-Gun UC-Davis Study of Retailers Funded by Joyce Foundation Underwhelms
There is a reason the Joyce Foundation funded Dr. Wintemute’s research and the Violence Policy Center helped with the questionnaire, and it wasn’t because they’re all interested in “the unique perspective of firearms licensees on important social issues and the firearms business itself.” While, this survey and journal article has not generated much attention thus far, one daily newspaper reporter decided to go into the field to get the reaction of firearms retailers. It seems they also don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.
Michigan Legislature Returns Tomorrow for One-Day Session and Continues to Delay Vote on Pro-Gun Bills
As previously reported here by the NRA-ILA, the Michigan State Police is still trying to defeat House Bill 5225, legislation that would eliminate the state handgun “permit-to-purchase” and registration requirements in Michigan. This important legislation is currently pending consideration by the state Senate, so the Senate leadership needs to hear from gun owners across Michigan today!
Facing debate over Fast and Furious
Murder is hard to sweep under the rug. President Obama may have invoked executive privilege to shield his Fast and Furious scandal from congressional investigators, but repeating this strategy won’t go down well during a presidential debate. The administration’s reckless scheme, which armed foreign drug lords, deserves a thorough airing before voters cast their ballots on Election Day.
Louisiana could strengthen gun rights
Louisiana would have the strongest gun rights law in the United States if proposed constitutional amendment No. 2 wins voter approval Nov. 6.“The right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental right. It deserves the highest protection of law,” said state Sen. Neil Riser, R-Columbia, proposition sponsor. “This amendment reinforces Second Amendment rights” guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution.
70-year-old woman scares off home invader, The Register-Herald, Beckley, W.V. 10/12/12
A 70-year-old woman was asleep in her Fayette County, W.V. home, when she was awakened by her burglar alarm. After arming herself with a .38-caliber revolver, the woman went to investigate. When she found the burglar, the criminal punched her in the face. The woman responded by firing at the home invader, causing him to flee. Local law enforcement officials have been supportive of the homeowner’s actions, with Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler noting, “If the victim of the burglary had been unarmed she could have been seriously injured or killed when confronted by this burglar.” (The Register-Herald, Beckley, W.V. 10/12/12)
NRA vs. Bloomberg
The National Rifle Association (NRA) has been saying for the past two years that President Obama would ban guns if given a second term. Mr. Obama had been careful to pretend otherwise until last week’s debate, when he let slip his intention to ban certain types of firearms. That has sparked a renewed political war on both sides of the issue.

9/15/2011 2:52:43 PM Well…it is a free market after all. Business are free to sell their products for whatever they think the market will bear. I do see your point though and I agree that prices are often inflated. I’ll give you two examples. I bought a YHM Diamond series hand guard in rifle length for one of my builds. Before making the purchase I checked around and noticed that YHM was selling it for $180 off their website. They’re the manufacturer so it doesn’t surprise me the cost seemed high. I checked with my local gun store and they were $1.00 less in cost. Then I check Midway……$99.00 SOLD! Cha-ching! That’s an $81.00 savings! Okay, so then I was checking around for a magpul MOE hand guard in carbine length which typically sells for around $20.00 I go to my local gun store and saw it priced for $36.00 Seriously? That’s almost double the price? So I just bought it someplace else. I love our free market, because the consumer is the one who has the power. If I don’t like the price, I just go elsewhere.
